Caravan awning measuring guide and Camptech size checker

To find the right awning size, first identify how it attaches to your caravan or motorhome. A full awning usually needs a ground-to-ground A-measurement. A porch or drive-away awning needs attachment-height and connection checks. A Thule Omnistor canopy needs the correct rail or mounting arrangement, length and, where required, adapter.

Find your size below, explore the right fitting style, or let us help you choose. Whether you want extra room for family holidays or a comfortable seasonal setup, a good fit starts with a few simple details.

Which awning measurement do you need?

Start with the attachment method
Awning type Main information to collect A separate check
Full caravan awning A-measurement in centimetres, exact caravan model and year. The size band for the selected awning and available frame options.
Porch awning Ground-to-rail height and usable straight rail at the intended position. Where its sides sit beside doors, windows and hatches.
Drive-away awning Height of the actual attachment point, tunnel and connection type. Door clearance, connection-kit compatibility and space to reconnect.
Bag or rail-mounted canopy Usable rail and the exact canopy’s fitting dimensions. Rail compatibility, obstructions and the canopy’s projection.
Wall- or roof-mounted cassette Vehicle details, mounting location, model and cassette length. Approved adapter and fitting arrangement; enclosure compatibility if needed.

Air or poled is not a sizing system. Check whether the awning is full, porch or drive-away before deciding which dimensions to use. Likewise, “390” in a model name is not a promise that it fits every caravan with a similar body length.

How to measure a caravan for a full awning

The A-measurement is the length of the fitting route from one ground point, around the awning rail, to the other ground point. Camptech uses this measurement in centimetres to identify a full-awning size band.

Full awning A-measurement: follow the rail from ground to ground The red line starts on the ground behind the caravan, follows the rear, roof and front awning rail, and finishes on the ground in front. The tow hitch is outside the measurement.ABFollow the awning rail — not the body length
Illustrative route only: follow your caravan’s actual awning rail and the chosen manufacturer’s measuring instructions. The tow hitch is not part of the A-measurement.
  1. Identify your caravan. Write down its make, exact model and model year. Keep the handbook’s awning measurement, if supplied, for comparison.
  2. Prepare a consistent measurement. Use level ground and the manufacturer’s specified measuring setup. A flexible tape or a non-stretch cord can follow the curved rail more easily than estimating from straight body dimensions.
  3. Follow the whole fitting route. Measure from ground point A, through the relevant rail route, back to ground point B. Keep the tape or cord on that route rather than cutting across curves. If using cord, mark its endpoints and measure its length accurately afterwards.
  4. Record and check. Write the result in centimetres and repeat the measurement. Compare it with the correct chart and the exact product’s size options. Resolve any disagreement before ordering.

Keep the figure you actually measured. For example, 9.12 metres is 912 centimetres; it is not a size called “9.12”. Do not round a reading into a neighbouring band to match a lower price or a listed size.

Between two sizes? We can help you choose. Send your measurement, caravan model and year, and the awning you like. A side photo is useful when the rail has a pronounced curve.

Size 21 1150–1175 cm
Size 22 1175–1200 cm

For example, 900 cm sits between sizes 10 and 11. Camptech has advised the larger size in some boundary cases to allow for an uneven pitch; the caravan’s rail shape can change that advice. We can help you confirm the better choice for your caravan and awning.

Outdoor Revolution, Sunncamp and porch-awning fit

A porch awning occupies part of the caravan side, so position matters as much as its width. Begin with the attachment height and the usable rail where you intend to fit it.

Porch awning: check rail height, usable straight rail and door clearance A green horizontal line marks the usable straight rail above the caravan door. A red vertical line marks height from level ground to that rail. Dashed sides mark the proposed awning position, which must avoid openings.Green: usable rail • Red: ground-to-rail heightCheck where the sides fall beside doors and windows
The proposed side positions are illustrative. Your awning’s sides need to land in suitable positions on your particular caravan.
  • Height: measure from level ground to the actual rail or attachment point. Compare that measurement with the full fitting-height range of the exact model.
  • Rail: measure the usable section and check any straight-rail requirement. A curve, obstruction or rail end may reduce the space you can use.
  • Openings: note the door, opening windows, service hatches and vents. Check the proposed side-panel positions and keep necessary openings usable.
  • Projection: allow space out from the caravan for the awning, pegging and guy lines, plus a practical route around it. Check your pitch restrictions.

As a model-specific example, Sunncamp specifies a 235–250 cm fitting height for the Swift Deluxe 390 SC. That range must not be assumed for every Sunncamp, Camptech or Outdoor Revolution porch awning. Check the precise version you are considering.

Browse porch awnings or Sunncamp awnings with your height and rail measurements to hand.

What changes for a drive-away awning?

Measure the height of the connection point, not just the roof. Record whether the intended connection uses a rail, an existing canopy or another manufacturer-specified arrangement. Check the tunnel’s height range, the connector requirements and the door’s opening path.

For a sliding door, consider its full travel. For a tall vehicle, confirm the correct height version rather than assuming that an awning described as “motorhome” will fit. If using an existing canopy’s front rail, use that actual attachment height and confirm the connection is suitable.

A drive-away setup also needs enough room to separate and reconnect the vehicle. Decide where the vehicle will park and how you will preserve that position on your pitch. See QCA’s drive-away awnings and Outdoor Revolution range.

Walker awnings: measure using Walker’s method

Choosing a Walker full awning? Use Walker’s own measuring route, then the chart for the exact Walker model.

  1. Park on flat ground. Start at ground point A and measure vertically up 185 cm to the rail at point B.
  2. Continue from B through the awning rail to ground point C at the other end. The total A–B–C length is the main measurement.
  3. Also record the horizontal width across the caravan at 185 cm high, and the rail height above the ground.

Send those figures with your caravan model, year and a side photo. We can help match them to your chosen Walker awning; use its model chart rather than the Camptech checker above.

Thule Omnistor: rail, wall or roof?

Choose the mounting arrangement before choosing a length or colour. A full-awning A-measurement does not select a cassette canopy or an adapter.

Omnistor 1200

A bag canopy that fits the caravan rail. Check the usable rail and exact canopy specification. It is not the same mounting system as a wall cassette.

Omnistor 5200

A side-wall cassette awning. Confirm the vehicle-specific fitting arrangement and adapter, along with the selected length and clearances.

Omnistor 6300

A roof-mounted awning. Confirm the correct roof adapter and available space alongside any existing roof equipment.

Your exact vehicle and body style determine the fitting kit. Tell us its make, model, year and any existing roof rails or equipment so we can help with the next step. Have the mounting arrangement checked by a suitable installer before fitting.

Build your Thule fitting checklist

Choose the family you like and build a short checklist for your fitting enquiry. We can help you narrow down the awning and adapter.

Choose a family above. Always record the exact vehicle make, model, year and body style.

Adding an enclosure, front panel or side panel

Identify the fitted awning before selecting an enclosure. Record its exact family, version, length and projection, then measure the installation height as the enclosure instructions require. Similar names or matching colours do not establish compatibility.

Keep adapter and accessory part numbers with your notes. For a used awning, a clear photograph of the identification label is more useful than a guess based on appearance. Check the product’s specified connection, installation-height bands and any extra fitting kit before selecting a tent or panel.

Useful photos for a fit enquiry

Take a clear side view showing the rail, door and windows. For a canopy or adapter enquiry, include the mounting area and any existing equipment label. Show the measurement’s start and end points when a reading is uncertain. Avoid including vehicle documents or unrelated personal information.

Common awning sizing questions

Is an A-measurement the same as caravan length?

No. An A-measurement follows the fitting route from the ground, through the awning rail and back to the ground. Shipping length, interior length and body length describe different things. Do not use them as a substitute.

Should I choose the larger size if I am between two sizes?

At a shared boundary, both neighbouring chart bands are shown. Camptech has recommended the larger size for some uneven-pitch situations, while a pronounced rail curve can favour the smaller size. Send QCA your measurement, caravan model and year, and preferred awning so we can help confirm the choice.

Can I use the size of an old awning?

Use it as a clue, then check the actual caravan and the replacement awning. Size numbers are not interchangeable between all brands. A different model year, rail or mounting arrangement can change the answer.

Does an air awning use different measurements from a poled awning?

The fitting style determines the measurements. A full air awning may use an A-measurement; a porch air awning needs its specified attachment height and rail width. Air tubes describe the frame, not a universal sizing method.

Will a 390 porch awning fit any caravan with a 390 cm side?

No. Check what the manufacturer means by 390, the stated fitting-height range, the required rail length and the position of the doors and windows. A model name alone does not establish compatibility.

Is the awning’s width the same as its rail length?

Not necessarily. Fabric width, roof width, connection length and cassette length can refer to different parts. Compare like-for-like dimensions in the exact product specification, especially for a bag canopy or enclosure.

Can I choose a Thule awning from the vehicle registration alone?

A registration or vehicle name is a starting point. Confirm the vehicle’s model year and body style, intended mounting location, available fitting space, exact awning and any required adapter. Conversions and existing fittings can affect the installation.

Can a seasonal awning stay erected all year?

Correct sizing does not establish year-round suitability. Camptech distinguishes seasonal use from leaving an awning up all year. Check the chosen fabric, frame, manufacturer’s use limits and your site’s rules separately.

How do I choose a carpet or annexe?

Match it to the exact awning model, size, depth and connection arrangement. Do not buy a carpet by A-measurement alone or assume that an older annexe will connect to a newer awning. Check whether accessories are included or selected separately.

What if the handbook and my measurement disagree?

Check the model year, units, rail route and preparation method, then measure again. Send both figures and a clear side photograph to QCA if the difference remains. Do not average the numbers or select a size simply because it is available.
